4th of July Layouts with Penny

June 23, 2024
Welcome back, crafty friends!
If you’re looking to do more scrapbooking this year, we guarantee that Penny’s demo will inspire you! She recently showed us all kinds of ways to make 15 (you read that right!) quick and easy layouts using a 6×6 paper pad. We don’t often think about using that size of paper for scrapbooking but as you’ll soon see…it works great!

Penny had a lot of patriotic/summertime photos she needed to scrapbook, so she turned to one of our favorite collections: Doodlebug’s Hometown USA! This colorful collection is just right for your 4th of July photos and so much more. Penny created tons of layouts with the 6×6 pad, ephemera, enamel dots, and more from this great line.

If you like the idea of using 6×6 papers on your layouts, we have several in stock (linked in the box above). Many of us have a stash of 6×6 papers, so it’s time to get them out and put them to use on layouts!

The Hometown USA 6×6 pad has 24 papers, two of each design. Penny used all but three sheets and a few scraps! All of her layouts use 12×12 white cardstock as the background. Penny explained that you can use the 6×6 papers in three ways: leave them full size, cut them in strips, or cut them in squares. Here’s a quick screenshot of Penny’s ideas!

Here are some fabulous pages Penny made by keeping the 6×6 squares intact. In some cases, she sliced them to span both the left and right pages. You’ll see how Penny used coordinating embellishments from the collection to accent each page.

Here Penny used a 6×6 piece in the upper left and lower right corners plus one in the center which she cut in half. You can see how these papers work perfectly with her 6×4 photos. Wow!

This layout features four 6×6 pieces, with two sliced vertically to extend across each page. I love that colorful border down the side! (Hint: It inspired one of my cards for an upcoming kit!)

This time, Penny used two 6×6 sheets but cut them to create a two-page spread. Look closely at how she cut and positioned her photos: On the left page, she has a 6×4 photo with three 2×2 photos beneath it. I love this design because it provides plenty of space for titles and embellishments both above and below.

On this page, Penny cut her 6×6 papers into two-inch strips which make a great border above and below her photos. Her photos are positioned in a block which allows her to fit several on this page!

Next, Penny used the “strip” idea to create a banner across the page. To add detail, she used fine-tip Le Pen markers for pen stitching.

On this fabulous page, Penny used her 6″ scraps to create a great background! She started at the bottom and adhered each strip all the way up. What a wonderful way to use up those strips!

Penny has always wanted to create a page with 1-inch squares and came up with a super-easy way to do it! Instead of gluing down all the 1″ squares individually, she cut 1″ strips of plain paper, and then adhered her 1-inch squares to it.

Here you can see how she uses the 1″ strips to make this layout a breeze to create! Once the squares are adhered to the strip, you can move those strips around on your page until you like the design. Genius!

Finally, Penny shared a bonus page she made using a full 12×12 sheet of paper plus the Simple Stories Page Template Design #7. This template helps you create a perfectly aligned page with lots of 2×2 photos! She combined four squares to accommodate a 4×4 photo. To learn more about the templates, visit this blog post/demo by Teresa. Love how your page turned out, Penny!

But wait…there’s more! Penny also shared a quick demo of adhesive options for adhering clear acetate. Which one do you think worked best? Watch the video to find out!

Wow, our thanks to Penny for this super-inspiring “power scrapbooking” demo! If you have fallen behind in your scrapbooking, you’ll love using Penny’s great ideas to help you get back on track. It’s time to carve out some time to make a few pages using Penny’s designs!
