Tim Holtz Abstract Floral Cards with Kellie

April 17, 2024

Hello, crafty friends!
Our coloring fun continued this week with a second demo from Kellie, this time featuring the new Tim Holtz Abstract Florals stamp set. As you’ll see in Kellie’s demo, this artsy stamp set makes it easy to create striking cards for a variety of occasions!

Kellie used 49 and Market Note Cards for her card bases. These sturdy notecards come in three colors and include matching envelopes.

If you’d like to watercolor the images with Distress Ink, you’ll need watercolor paper as Kellie used on this beautiful panel. She stamped a single flower plus a sympathy greeting with Archival Ink (we like Jet Black) then used Distress Inks to watercolor, as she did in THIS DEMO. Archival Ink is watercolor-friendly and will not smear when it gets wet.

This card also started out with a blue base but Kellie transformed the color with Mustard Seed and Brushed Corduroy around the edges. If you want to try watercoloring on these notecards, you’ll want to be conservative with the amount of water you use and work quickly so the paper doesn’t pill. She also added dots and traced over the stamped word with her black Glaze Pen. Love it!

Kellie demonstrated this watercoloring technique on the pink card below which features pink and green Distress Inks. She worked quickly with minimal water to prevent pooling on the card base. We love how this card turned out!

Kellie created this striking panel on watercolor paper, coloring the flowers with warm colors of Distress Inks and softening the edges with a two colors of brown Distress Ink. A black mat + bit of bakers’ twine are nice ways to dress up the completed piece which looks so sweet displayed on one of our easels.

We love how Kellie stamped off the edges on this next card and even added a stamped image on the envelope. What a beautiful card to receive in the mail!

In addition to Distress Inks, Kellie showed us how to color these same stamped images with Tombo Dual Brush Markers. For this card, she stamped in Archival Ink on watercolor paper then used her markers (Yay, Sorbet set) to color the images followed by a waterbrush to “smooth” out the colors.

On this beautiful card, Kellie used masking paper to cover the the first flower which allowed her to stamp the second one so that it looks as if it’s behind the first. More on masking in a future video! Meanwhile, check out THIS blog post/demo with Teresa.

What a fun morning with Kellie…two days in a row! We’ve learned a lot about different ways to color stamped images to make simple but eyecatching cards. They’re super-fun to make and even better to receive! Thank you so much for inspiring us with these great techniques, Kellie!
