CRAFT ALONG: Watercolor Coffee Card Fronts with Teresa

January 15, 2024

Hello, crafty friends!
The Midwest has been enduring a very cold snap, so it seems quite appropriate that Teresa’s latest Watercolor Craft Along demo features a coffee motif! It’s the perfect time of year for a cup of something warm and toasty. Teresa’s demo featured super-fun and easy ways to watercolor stamped panels with some of our favorite images. If you missed the LIVE video, just pick up the supplies she used and do the project with Teresa LATER at your convenience!

Now let’s take a look at all the creative and colorful ways Teresa watercolored her images!

Teresa showed us how to turn the stamped panel into a tag simply by punching the corners with the We R Diagonal Corner Punch! (If you don’t yet have this tool, at just $11.99 it’s affordable and super-handy!) Notice how Teresa used a variety of blues on this beautiful piece, even stitching around the tag to visually frame it and choosing the perfect colors of ribbon to bring it all together.

That little strip of lace at the bottom, accented with teal stitching, adds a pretty softness to the tag. The Essential Trims by 49 and Market (available in 3 colors) are nice to keep on hand for a whole variety of projects.

During her demo, Teresa showed us how to use the Distress Watercolor Pencils to add gorgeous color to the panel. The great thing about watercolor is that IMPERFECTION is the name of the game! You don’t need to color inside the lines…in fact, adding color outside the lines makes your project even better. Can’t beat that! 🙂

Teresa shared two versions of this warm and cozy panel created with three different pencils. We love how she tied the finished piece with narrow silk ribbon to pull out the color, then matted it in black to create a truly striking card front.

Just look at the rich color on this next card! Distress Watercolor Pencils are pure pigment so when you apply them to your paper, they start out intense! When you add water, they blend out beautifully.

During the video, Teresa showed us how to sharpen your watercolor pencils and tap the leftover shavings from your pencil sharpener into this convenient lidded Ink Palette. Add a bit of water and mix to get even more use from your pencils! You can even mix more than one color of shavings to create your own colors, saving them all for later use.

This is a fun idea: Just add a “river” of color across the center of your panel. The watercolor shades allow the design to show through.

Teresa shared so many ways to color the same image! Here she die cut the image with the classic Stacked Deckle die to give it a rough edge, then popped it up on a larger ink-blended panel. Purple and yellow (complementary colors = opposites on the color wheel), are always a striking choice.

If your goal is to make more cards in 2024, look how easily you can create card fronts by watercoloring! Each one will be different and vibrant. Just cut them out, add a simple mat, and adhere them to a card base for uniquely beautiful greetings. We love these ideas, Teresa!

But wait…there’s more!
Penny took Teresa’s watercolor panels and used Copic Markers to color them for a completely different effect! We all enjoyed seeing how she used her markers to create these richly colored images. Below each sample, Penny made note of her marker colors, too. Wow, thank you, Penny! Tip: To see any of Penny’s previous Copic demos, just choose the Copic Markers category on the main page of this blog.
