Get Sparkly with Teresa!

23 October 2023

Hello, crafty friends!
With the holidays nearly upon us, you might say that it’s the season for GLITTER! Last week, Teresa shared many fun uses for glitter as well as lots of creative ways to adhere it. Teresa explained that the adhesive you use will affect how the glitter looks on your project. That’s why it’s fun to just play and see what happens!

But first: Just in time for “glitter season”, Tim Holtz has released a big vintage-look bottle ($24.99) of our favorite Rock Candy Glitter. This value-priced bottle will get you through the holiday season in full sparkle mode!

With this first card, Teresa reminded us that glitter is not just for the holidays; it can be used year-round! To make this pretty card, she created a background and stamped a leaf with Distress Ink. While the ink was still wet, she sprinkled the card with Frosted Crystal Translucent Embossing Powder and partially dried it with a heat tool. She then sprinkled the surface with glitter and finished drying it. The result is a beautiful shine! Who knew that Frosted Crystal could be used as an adhesive for glitter? Wow!

Next, Teresa showed us this sweet and snarky card made with plaid paper (Christmas Backdrops) and Small Talk Snarky Stickers (linked above). A paper doll from the Christmas Layers and Paper Dolls makes a perfect focal point. Love the photo corners on this card!

To add color to the hat, Teresa used her Versamark Pen which allows you to apply embossing ink to a small area. She sprinkled the hat with Distress Embossing Glaze (color = Peeled Paint) and heat set it. Glaze creates a beautiful shine that you can see through, unlike embossing powders which are opaque. To add sparkle to the fur on the little girl’s outfit, she used the same Versamark pen to color it quickly then sprinkled with glitter. This is a great idea for applying glitter to a specific area!

For this next sweet and sparkly card, Teresa used the Festive Art “Element” Stencils, Tim’s latest set in this series of great basic shapes. See all of his “Element” stencils here! Teresa paired it with the PhotoPlay Inside Out stamp set which has a great assortment of greetings.

After stenciling her tree, Teresa used the small holes in the stencil to add “snow” in the background as well as sparkle to her tree. This time she used Translucent Texture Paste through the stencil and sprinkled the wet paste with glitter that had been tinted with Pool Alcohol Ink. Wait…colored glitter? Texture Paste as an adhesive? We’re having way too much fun! 🙂

Speaking of tinted glitter, you don’t have to stop at cards! Teresa covered the outside of this little jelly jar with glitter she colored with orange Alcohol Ink. This little jar would be cute to add to a tiered tray!

In her demo, Tersa showed us how to tint glitter and keep it in one of Tim’s little storage jars!

Teresa was on a roll with her sparkly ideas! Next she added beautiful shine to the front of one of Doug’s wood trees. After painting her 5″ tree with Acrylic Paint (color = Lost Shadow), she covered the front with one of her favorite papers from Tim’s Backdrops then sanded and inked the edges.

Next it was time to add sparkle! She used the Frosted Crystal Embossing Powder with Rock Candy Glitter for an extra beautiful shine. (To see more with ideas Frosted Crystal, check out this blog post featuring our friend, Elishia. She uses it on Tim’s Ephemera pieces for a lovely vintage effect.)

To apply glitter evenly, Teresa recommends the Glitter Duster (linked above). It prevents big blobs of glitter from landing on your project and allows you to control how much you apply.

For her demo, Teresa showed us how to add Frosted Crystal and glitter to one of Tim’s holly ephemera pieces, as well as how to glitter a piece of his Confections candy. The glitter makes everything a bit more festive! To glitter the candy, she used Glossy Accents as an adhesive then coated it with glitter by rolling it around in a tiny red Solo Cup!

Teresa also showed us different ways to add glitter to a bottlebrush tree using Collage Medium and a Glitter Duster to apply a light sparkly mist. It’s a very pretty effect!

Teresa shared how to add glitter to a real pumpkin for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She used a rub-on tool to apply the 49 and Market pink “Spice” rub-ons to the pumpkin, then applied Distress Resist Spray which dries clear and can be used as an adhesive. Teresa finished with her Glitter Duster for a special bit of sparkle. So beautiful!

Wow, what a great morning with Teresa! We learned so many ways to apply glitter — beyond the typical liquid glue! We learned how to tint glitter and apply it to all kinds of surfaces from cards to pumpkins. Thank you, Teresa, for sharing so many creative ideas!
